These three roles have multiple variable prefixes each:
- kakaotalk: matrix_appservice_kakaotalk + matrix_appservice_kakaotalk_node
- telegram: matrix_mautrix_telegram + matrix_mautrix_telegram_lottieconverter
- synapse: matrix_synapse + matrix_synapse_customized + matrix_synapse_rust_synapse_compress_state
For each: renamed _docker_image* to _container_image* (and _docker_src*,
_docker_repo* where applicable), added deprecation entries in
validate_config.yml, updated group_vars references, and moved
deprecation tasks to the front of validate_config.yml.

matrix_synapse_systemd_service_post_start_delay_seconds is assigned a string value, and setup fails while creating the service file. It is impossible to compare str and int.
Switch the systemd ExecStartPost health check from docker exec + curl
to polling docker inspect for container health status. This piggybacks
on the container image's built-in HEALTHCHECK instead of duplicating it.
Also add a configurable container health interval (5s for Traefik setups,
15s otherwise) to speed up startup readiness detection without affecting
non-Traefik deployments.

Previously, we had a 10-second magical delay.
Now we first do a healthcheck to figure out when it really is up.
Then, we do the same 10-second magical delay to account for the time it
may take for a reverse-proxy (like Traefik) to pick up Synapse's routes.
This is an attempt at optimizing service startup.
The effect is most pronounced when many services are restarted one by one.
The systemd service manager role sometimes does this - for example when `just install-service synapse` runs.
In such cases, a 5-second delay for each Synapse worker service
(or other bridge/bot service that waits on the homeserver) quickly adds up to a lot.
When services are all stopped fully and then started, the effect is not so pronounced, because
`matrix-synapse.service` starts first and pulls all worker services (defined as `Wants=` for it).
Later on, when the systemd service manager role "starts" these worker services, they're started already.
Even if they had a 5-second wait each, it would have happened in parallel.
This allows people to augment the Synapse image with custom tools and
addons without having to rebuild it from scratch.
If customizations are enabled, the playbook will build a new
`localhost/matrixdotorg/synapse:VERSION-customized` image
on top of the default one (`FROM matrixdotorg/synapse:VERSION`)
and with custom Dockerfile build steps.
For servers that self-build the Synapse image, the Synapse image will be
built first, before proceding to extend it the same way.
In the future, we'll also have easy to enable Dockerfile build steps
for modules that the playbook supports.
As stream writer workers are also powered by the `generic_worker`
Synapse app, this necessitated that we provide means for distinguishing
between them and regular `generic_workers`.
I've also taken the time to optimize nginx configuration generation
(more Jinja2 macro usage, less duplication).
Worker names have also changed.
Workers are now named sequentially like this:
- `matrix-synapse-worker-0-generic`
- `matrix-synapse-worker-1-stream-writer-typing`
- `matrix-synapse-worker-2-pusher`
instead of `matrix-synapse-worker_generic_worker-18111` (indexed with a
port number).
People who modify `matrix_synapse_workers_enabled_list` directly will
need to adjust their configuration.

People often report and ask about these "failures".
More-so previously, when the `docker kill/rm` output was collected,
but it still happens now when people do `systemctl status
matrix-something` and notice that it says "FAILURE".
Suppressing to avoid further time being wasted on saying "this is
expected".
matrix_synapse_federation_port_enabled can be disabled by users, for
example, when one wants to use the same port for client and federation
requests (docs/configuring-playbook-federation.md).

I haven't really traced it (yet), but on some servers, I'm observing
`ansible-playbook ... --tags=start` completing very slowly, waiting
to stop services. I can't reproduce this on all Matrix servers I manage.
I suspect that either the systemd version is to blame or that some
specific service is not responding well to some `docker kill/rm` command.
`ExecStop` seems to work great in all cases and it's what we've been
using for a very long time, so I'm reverting to that.
We had to remove UID/GID environment variables that we used to pass
to the Synapse container, because it was causing a problem after

We were using both `--user` and UID/GID environment variables until now.
Fixes a regression caused by a5ee39266c.
If the user id and group id were different than 991:991
(which used to be a hardcoded default for us long ago),
there was a mismatch between what Synapse was trying to use (991:991)
and what it was actually started with (in `--user=..`). It was then
trying to change ownership, which was failing.
This was mostly affecting newer installations which were not using the
991:991 defaults we had long ago (since a1c5a197a9).
These are just defensive cleanup tasks that we run.
In the good case, there's nothing to kill or remove, so they trigger an
error like this:
> Error response from daemon: Cannot kill container: something: No such container: something
and:
> Error: No such container: something
People often ask us if this is a problem, so instead of always having to
answer with "no, this is to be expected", we'd rather eliminate it now
and make logs cleaner.
In the event that:
- a container is really stuck and needs cleanup using kill/rm
- and cleanup fails, and we fail to report it because of error
suppression (`2>/dev/null`)
.. we'd still get an error when launching ("container name already in use .."),
so it shouldn't be too hard to investigate.
This switches the `docker exec` method of spawning
Synapse workers inside the `matrix-synapse` container with
dedicated containers for each worker.
We also have dedicated systemd services for each worker,
so this are now:
- more consistent with everything else (we don't use systemd
instantiated services anywhere)
- we don't need the "parse systemd instance name into worker name +
port" part
- we don't need to keep track of PIDs manually
- we don't need jq (less depenendencies)
- workers dying would be restarted by systemd correctly, like any other
service
- `docker ps` shows each worker separately and we can observe resource
usage
There was a `matrix_nginx_proxy_enabled|default(False)` check, but:
- it didn't seem to work reliably for some reason (hmm)
- referring to a `matrix_nginx_proxy_*` variable from within the
`matrix-synapse` role is not ideal
- exposing always happened on `127.0.0.1`, which may not be good enough
for some rarer setups (where the own webserver is external to the host)
The Docker 19.04 -> 20.10 upgrade contains the following change
in `/usr/lib/systemd/system/docker.service`:

The `multi-user.target` requirement in `After` seems to be in conflict
with our `WantedBy=multi-user.target` and `After=docker.service` /
`Requires=docker.service` definitions, causing the following error on
startup for all of our systemd services:
> Job matrix-synapse.service/start deleted to break ordering cycle starting with multi-user.target/start
A workaround which appears to work is to add `DefaultDependencies=no`
to all of our services.
`-v` magically creates the source destination as a directory,
if it doesn't exist already. We'd like to avoid this magic
and the potential breakage that it might cause.
We'd rather fail while Docker tries to find things to `--mount`
than have it automatically create directories and fail anyway,
while having contaminated the filesystem.
There's a lot more `-v` instances remaining to be fixed later on.
This is just some start.
Things like `matrix_synapse_container_additional_volumes` and
`matrix_nginx_proxy_container_additional_volumes` were not changed to
use `--mount`, as options for each one are passed differently
(`ro` is `ro`, but `rw` doesn't exist and `slave` is `bind-propagation=slave`).
To avoid breaking people's custom volume mounts, we keep it as it is for now.
A deficiency with `--mount` is that it lacks the `z` option (SELinux
ownership changes), and some of our `-v` instances use that. I'm not
sure how supported SELinux is for us right now, but it might be,
and breaking that would not be a good idea.
Depending on the distro, common commands like sleep and chown may either
be located in /bin or /usr/bin.
Systemd added path lookup to ExecStart in v239, allowing only the
command name to be put in unit files and not the full path as
historically required. At least Ubuntu 18.04 LTS is however still on
v237 so we should maintain portability for a while longer.
